Who Is Emmy Rossum’s Ex-Husband? Inside the Brief, Secret Marriage to Justin Siegel

Emmy Rossum First Husband: Meet Her Ex-Husband Justin Siegel

Emmy Rossum, the actress who captivated audiences as Fiona Gallagher on Shameless and as Christine in The Phantom of the Opera, has always been a fiercely private person. However, in a recent and revealing appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, she peeled back the curtain on a pivotal and little-known chapter of her life: her secret first marriage. The story that emerged was less a fairy tale and more a cautionary one, filled with ultimatums, a gut feeling she chose to ignore, and the complicated reality of being a young woman in Hollywood.

For years, fans knew Rossum was married to Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail, but the details of her first husband remained largely in the shadows. Now, at 39, she has finally told the story of Justin Siegel, the ultimatum that led to their wedding, and why she kept it a secret from everyone, including her own mother. Her journey from a secretive, ill-fated marriage to a loving, stable partnership with Esmail is a testament to personal growth and finding the right fit.

The Ultimatum and the Secret Wedding

Emmy Rossum’s first husband was Justin Siegel, a music executive who worked at Interscope Records, the very label Rossum was signed to at the time. The pair began dating in 2007, but their relationship was accelerated by circumstance. Rossum landed a role in the film Dragonball: Evolution, which required her to travel to Durango, Mexico, for a grueling six-month shoot. Faced with the prospect of a long-distance relationship, Siegel presented her with a stark choice: break up or get married.

Rossum, then only 21, made a decision that she now candidly admits was a mistake. “Abandonment is my core wound,” she explained on the podcast, revealing that she was coming off two devastating heartbreaks and was terrified of being left again. Her 21-year-old brain rationalized that “divorce doesn’t seem that complicated”. In February 2008, with a flight to Mexico looming that very night, they hastily married. The ceremony was informal, to say the least. Siegel printed a marriage contract off the internet and found an officiant online.

Rossum, in a telling detail, threw on a white turtleneck from her closet, ignoring what she called the “smoke detector in my head” telling her not to go through with it. She kept the marriage a secret from everyone, including her mother, because “I knew in my gut it wasn’t right”. The couple split in 2009, and Siegel filed for divorce in September of that year, with the divorce being finalized in 2010.

From Brief Romances to a Lasting Love

Following her divorce from Justin Siegel, Emmy Rossum navigated the dating world with a few notable, albeit brief, relationships. She was romantically linked to Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz from 2009 to 2010. Later, she found love on the set of Shameless itself, dating her co-star Tyler Jacob Moore from 2011 to 2013. Moore played Tony Markovich, a character who had a crush on her on-screen persona, Fiona Gallagher. However, like her previous relationships, this one eventually came to an end.

Rossum’s romantic life took a definitive turn for the better in 2013 when she met Sam Esmail. He was the writer and director of the film Comet, in which she was cast as the lead. Their professional relationship blossomed into a personal one, and they made their public debut as a couple at the film’s premiere in June 2014. The proposal was as creative as you might expect from a filmmaker; Esmail used a mock New York Times article to pop the question in August 2015.

The couple tied the knot on May 28, 2017, in an intimate ceremony at the Central Synagogue in New York City. Rossum has described their relationship as a “slow burn,” a stark contrast to the rushed ultimatum of her first marriage. Today, they are a family of four, having welcomed a daughter in 2021 and a son in 2023. It’s clear that while her first marriage was a secret born of fear, her relationship with Sam Esmail is a celebrated partnership built on mutual respect and a shared creative vision.
