Vanessa Guillen's body remains were found along the Leon River on June 30 after being missing for more than two months. She was beaten to death on April 22, 2020, inside an armory at Fort Hood, Texas, by another soldier, Aaron David Robinson. Robinson killed her because he was worried about getting in jail, as Guillen observed on Robinson’s cellphone lock screen, which had a photo of Cecily Aguilar.

Vanessa Guillen had been missing for over two months when her dismembered remains were found on June 30 along the Leon River. Vanessa Guillen, a 20-year-old United States Army soldier, was bludgeoned to death inside an armory at Fort Hood, Texas, on April 22, 2020, by another soldier, Aaron David Robinson. Robinson left Fort Hood after hearing of the discovery, and when authorities tried to find him in nearby Killeen, Texas, he shot himself to death.
Texas officials revealed a possible motive in the 2020 murder of Army Spc. Vanessa Guillen in court records released on May 19. According to a 61-page Texas Department of Public Safety investigation, Cecily Aguilar, the lone defendant charged in the murder, told investigators that Spc. Aaron Robinson beat Guillen in the skull with a hammer after Guillen spotted a picture of Aguilar on Robinson's phone.
According to the Texas DPS document, Aguilar later explained why Robinson killed Guillen, saying Guillen saw Robinson's cellphone lock screen, which contained a picture of Aguilar. It was stated as:
[Robinson] told her he was worried about getting in trouble for violating the Army’s fraternization rules since Aguilar was still married to another soldier and he hit Guillen in the head with a hammer.
According to police in Killeen, Texas, Robinson died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound when confronted by officers on July 1, 2020. After discovering Guillen's remains, which were buried along the Leon River about 30 miles from Fort Hood, investigators attempted to apprehend him.
According to Aguilar's statement, Robinson took Aguilar to the Leon River under cover of darkness, where he showed her Vanessa Guillen's body in a large black tote bag. Aguilar claimed Robinson then threatened her with a gun and demanded she helps him dispose of Guillen's body and incriminating evidence.
Army investigators were contacted on June 30, 2020, when contractors in Belton found some partial human remains along the Leon River. On June 20, Texas Rangers, detectives, and cadaver dogs inspected the area after a fire mound was discovered nearby. Investigators proposed the hypothesis that wildlife had excavated the remains, which had previously been covered beneath the concrete. According to Tim Miller, Director of Texas EquuSearch, it was the most sophisticated burial site he had ever seen.
Authorities re-interviewed Cecily Anne Aguilar, a local lady who was the estranged wife of a Fort Hood soldier, later that evening, at about 8:30 p.m. Aguilar was said to be the girlfriend of Aaron David Robinson, a specialist ranking enlisted soldier who was one of the last people to see Guillen on the day she vanished and had previously been examined by investigators. Robinson admitted to Aguilar that he had killed a female soldier at Fort Hood, according to Aguilar's account to the police.
Aguilar is currently charged with 11 charges, including one count of conspiracy to tamper with documents or proceedings, two counts of tampering with documents or proceedings, three counts of accessory after the fact, one count of destroying, altering, or falsifying records in a federal inquiry, and four counts of false statement or representation.
